The Duke Evaluation System, now in an app

Your eye for a horse.
Now measured.

EqEval scores your horse on up to 85 categories of the Duke Evaluation System (DES), turns them into one EQ Score from 0 to 100, and points to the categories with the most room to grow. Evaluate again, and the progress of horse and rider is on record.

Why EqEval

Every ride tells you something. EqEval makes sure you can measure it.

Good trainers already see what a horse has. EqEval gives that expertise a shared structure: one method, one scale and one record that riders, trainers and owners can compare, explain and build on.

Consistent The same criteria and the same scale every time, for any horse and any evaluator. A written guide sits inside every category, so everyone knows what a 7 means.
Comparable One EQ Score from 0 to 100, read on the DES scale, from a horse to learn on to legendary. Compare a horse with itself over months, or with other horses side by side.
Actionable The weakest categories become exercises from the library and tasks in the training log. The next evaluation shows whether the work paid off.
How it works

One loop for the development of horse and rider.

Evaluate, understand, train and measure again. Each turn of the loop leaves a record you can look back on.

Inside an evaluation

Ten minutes at the ring, or the full method at home.

Pick the depth that fits the moment. Every mode uses the same scale and the same formula, so a quick check and a full evaluation stay comparable.

Quick · about 10 minutesThe key categories for the discipline: 26 for Jumper and Equitation, 21 for Hunter.
Method · about 30 minutesEvery category that counts for the discipline: 82 for Jumper and Equitation, 78 for Hunter.
CustomChoose the categories you want, for example only the jumping or only the mind before a purchase.
Didn’t see something? Mark it “Not observed” and it won’t count against the horse.

Meet Jay Duke

A lifetime with show jumping horses, now in a method you can use.

Jay grew up in Calgary in a family of horsemen, rode for Team Canada and now coaches riders, develops young horses and designs courses across North America. He wrote the method in his book, The Analytics of the Show Jumping World, and built EqEval so it could be used at the ring.

Duke Evaluation System · DES

A coach’s eye, written down category by category.

Jay Duke turned decades of riding, coaching and buying horses into a method, published in his book The Analytics of the Show Jumping World. EqEval puts the system and the guide for every category in your hand.

“A jump is simply a taller canter stride; the better the canter, the better the jump.”

EQ Analyst

AI that explains the result. It never sets the score.

The EQ Score always comes from the method. EQ Analyst reads it with you: what stands out, what to work on first, and what changed since the last evaluation.

· Plain-language reading of every result · Consistency check before you save · A development plan from the weakest areas · Questions about your horse, any time · Voice notes straight into the training log
